Here's a totally unimportant (but interesting!) fact about oregano: if it wasn't for pizza, we probably wouldn't even have oregano in America.
Oregano was barely heard of in the U.S. until soldiers returning home after World War II raved about the pizza they tasted in Italy. As soon as the troops came home, pizza grew rapidly in popularity and so did its main spice, oregano.
Here's another interesting fact about oregano: when we talk about it, we're really speaking of the spice rather than the plant it comes from. Most of the ingredients and supplements you're learning about in this program come from a particular plant. But oregano (which in some places is called wild marjoram) is derived from the leaves of different species not just one.
That means oregano describes a flavor, or aroma not a specific plant.
The various herbs used to produce oregano are all in the mint family, and all have strong, flavor-filled leaves and flowering tops. As a result, we have different varieties of oregano such as European, Mexican, and others. We are most familiar with the European type because it's produced in the U.S. as well as Italy, Spain, Greece and Turkey.
The plants which produce oregano (which comes from the Greek word for joy of the mountain ) are famous for dark broad leaves, a strong aroma, and white or purple flowers. Oregano is used to flavor many food products like barbeque sauce, Mexican food, meat, sausage, soups, salads, liqueurs, and more.
Good quality oregano can be so strong it almost numbs the tongue!
