Selenium - An Antioxidant for Good Health**
Selenium is an essential trace mineral necessary for good health.** Crab, liver, fish, poultry and wheat are generally good sources of Selenium, but the natural levels found in these sources may vary. This is why supplementation can be important.
Selenium provides powerful antioxidant support and has the ability to fight cell-damaging free radicals in the body.** Free radicals can contribute to oxidative stress, which in turn may contribute to the premature aging of cells. Selenium also promotes immune system health, and is an integral part of the protein structure in teeth.** As a vital part of thyroid hormone metabolism, Selenium assists in regulating the body’s metabolic rate.**
Studies have shown that Selenium levels in the body may be positively associated with prostate health in men.**
The Selenium Trials
In a clinical trial, 22 subjects received 50 or 100mcg Selenium or placebo daily for 15 weeks.1 The study concluded that Selenium status is important to immune system health and function.
Selenium may also support prostate health.* In the NPC trial,1,312 men were given Selenium (200 mcg daily) or placebo.2Men who received Selenium were shown to have significant support of their prostate health when compared to placebo.
