The Keys to Staying Healthy As Seasons Change

by Melissa Chichester

As the seasons change, we look forward to the snow melting in the spring, hot days in the summer sun, colorful crunching leaves in the fall, and the wonder of the first snow in the winter.

In the middle of the busyness though, your body is also going through seasonal changes.

You may feel shifts in your energy, seasonal-specific issues like allergies, or sleep disturbances from adjusting to Daylight Savings Time or having less or more light during the daytime hours. The good news is you can use a new season as a valuable tool to support your health and improve your wellness.

Spring

In the springtime, everything is blooming again and waking up. So are we humans! It’s normal for people to spend more time outdoors in the spring. We also get back to spending more time outdoors.

Health concerns to look out for in the spring include:

  • Allergies (especially from pollen)
  • Bug bites (tick season)
  • Sunburn
  • Sports injuries from an increase in activity
  • Less sleep (more sunlight)

Being aware of these issues can help you stay healthy throughout the spring season.

Summer

Endless summer days are what dreams are made of… and with summer come some very familiar concerns!

In the summer months, there’s typically an increase in:

  • More allergies
  • Sunburn
  • Dehydration
  • Food poisoning (from leaving food out too long while camping, having cookouts, etc.)
  • Sports injuries (especially water incidents)
  • An increase in unhealthy eating
  • Less sleep

Here are some simple steps you can take to support your health in the summer.

  • Wear sunscreen and reapply it every two hours – more often if you’re sweating or swimming.
  • Wear sun-protective clothing and hats.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
  • Wash your hands before handling food (in any season!)
  • Cover food when it is not being eaten at cookouts and picnics – and don’t let it sit out for too long.
  • Drink water throughout the day.

Fall

Fall is the perfect time to cozy up and wind down. It’s also a great time to prepare for darker days and nights.

Health concerns that may arise in the fall include:

  • Lack of Vitamin D production
  • Allergies
  • Cold and flu season
  • Mental health struggles from less daylight
  • Joint discomfort from colder weather
  • Dry hair, skin, and nails

Winter

Winter health risks include:

  • Increased risk of falls
  • Increased risk of snow removal-related injuries
  • Less energy from less light
  • Increased eating during holidays
  • Weight gain from holidays and less activity
  • Injuries from extreme cold

There’s no doubt that winter is one of the most challenging seasons when it comes to staying healthy.

Supplements for every season

A simple way to support well-being all year long is with a daily multivitamin in addition to your healthy lifestyle.

>>Why Taking a Multivitamin Can Be Beneficial

And if you are a senior, Puritan’s Pride® Senior Healthy Aging Support is a specialized formula specifically designed for mature adults.

This unique supplement offers vital ingredients like Co Q-10 to promote cardiovascular health and lutein and zeaxanthin to support healthy vision and skin.**

Co Q-10 is naturally found in the energy-producing cells of the heart. Each heartbeat not only pumps nutrient-rich blood to the extremities but delivers blood to the tissues of the heart as well.

Levels of Co Q-10 in the heart decline approximately 30% from our early 20s to early 40s, and by more than 50% in our late 70s.

Supplementing your natural levels of Co Q-10 can support heart health as those levels decline over time.**

Lutein is a type of pigment called carotenoids that are found in many fruits and vegetables. It cannot be produced in the body, but Lutein from the diet is stored in the eyes, particularly in the macula. The macula is the area of the retina with a high concentration of specialized photoreceptor cells and is responsible for sharp focus on objects straight in front of you.

With so much light entering the eye, the retina is an area of high oxidative stress. Lutein helps filter out high-energy blue light from the sun and artificial light before it reaches those important photoreceptor cells.** Blue light may otherwise induce oxidative stress and possible free-radical damage to the eyes.

As with Co Q-10, the body’s stores of lutein can decrease as we age. Senior Healthy Aging Support uses a specialized form of lutein and Zeaxanthin that has specific benefits in addition to supporting healthy vision, including helping to alleviate occasional eye strain from digital device use and promoting skin elasticity.**

Both Co Q-10 and lutein also have antioxidant properties, which help neutralize free radicals that can cause oxidative stress and damage cells.**

There are many factors that affect how we age but choosing the right supplement can give you the nutritional support you need to live life to the fullest. Always speak with your doctor before taking any supplements to figure out which one is a fit for your lifestyle.
