Bone health isn’t just about getting enough calcium daily. You also need vitamin K2 and vitamin D3. These essential nutrients help you get the most from calcium because they help with getting the mineral from your diet to where it needs to go—your bones!*
As is the case with calcium, however, the majority of us don’t get enough vitamin K2 or vitamin D3 to meet dietary recommendations. Supplementation can help with ensuring that we’re achieving the recommended dietary intake levels for these nutrients daily.
Plant-Based Calcium from Algae
As one of the most important minerals in your body, calcium provides the raw materials for strong bones.* It also helps maintain vital systems in the body, including the heart, muscles, and nerves.*
Our Bone Complex features plant-based calcium that is hand-harvested from marine algae that has washed up onto the pristine shores of the northern Brazilian coastline in South America. The algae is then milled into a powder that provides calcium along with other naturally occurring minerals.
The overall process provides an organic algae powder with absorbable calcium that is an ideal plant-based alternative to rock-sourced or shell-sourced supplements.
Vitamin K2 – The Right Vitamin K for Bone Health
In addition to an adequate diet and exercise, Calcium and vitamin D are well known for the role they play in building bones, but did you know vitamin K plays a key role in bone formation and health too?
Vitamin K represents a family of fat-soluble compounds that’s provided in two different forms that are naturally found in our diets:
• Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) is found mainly in green leafy and cruciferous vegetables such as spinach, kale, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli. It represents about 90% of the vitamin K in our diets.
• Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) is found in fermented foods and a small amount may be in some fruits, meat, fish and dairy products. Vitamin K2 occurs in much smaller quantities in the diet as compared to vitamin K1.
Although vitamin K1 and K2 are related, they act on different pathways in the body. The primary function of vitamin K1 is its involvement in the pathway of blood coagulation, while vitamin K2 is has a key role in supporting bone health.*
Because vitamin K2 is not as readily found in the diet, taking a supplement is a sure way to be sure you get enough.
Vitamin D3 – A potent and active form of vitamin D
Your body can produce vitamin D when your skin is directly exposed to sunlight. However, a variety of factors such as insufficient sun exposure, use of sunscreen products, and living at a northern latitude can lead to inadequate levels in our bodies.
As a fat-soluble compound, vitamin D is naturally found in the diet in two forms:
• Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is found in some plants such as mushrooms and is the most common form used in fortifying foods.
• Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form naturally produced in the body when your skin is directly exposed to sunlight. It’s found in egg yolks and in fatty fish such as tuna and salmon.
